Joint laboratory

The LINK is an joint International Research Laboratory (IRL) governed by two academic research institutions from France and Japan (CNRS and NIMS), and an industrial group (Saint-Gobain) :

The CNRS is the largest governmental research organization in France, encompassing various scientific disciplines. Its mission is to conduct research of excellence and contribute to the advancement of knowledge across a wide range of fields, from natural sciences and engineering to social sciences and humanities. Through its network of research units and collaborations, CNRS strives to address societal challenges and promote innovation for the benefit of society.

NIMS is Japan’s sole public research organization specialized in materials research, boasting a number of distinctive characteristics and achievements. As a Designated National Research and Development Institute, NIMS aims to create world-class achievements in materials science and technology.

With a long international history, which began in France in 1665 when the Royal Glass Works was established, the Saint-Gobain group is now the world leader on sustainable habitat, providing innovative solutions in response to increasing demand for energy efficiency, environmental conservation and more.

Priviligied sites

As a IRL from the CNRS-chemistry institute, the LINK presents two CNRS laboratories as partners as mirror units, or priviligied sites since 2024: The Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes (ISCR) is a joint Research Department (UMR: Unité Mixte de Recherche) associating the CNRS (INC et INSIS), The Université de Rennes, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes (ENSCR) and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Rennes (INSA de Rennes). This Institute, founded in January 1st, 2006, gathers together all the academic forces in chemistry from the Rennes site. At the beginning of 2023, it brings together more than 280 permanent people, including approximately 140 assistant-professors and professors, 60 CNRS researchers and 80 engineers and technicians, leading to an overall workforce of more than 500 people. Its organisation in eight research teams of various sizes along with two administrative and scientific technical departments, makes it possible to combine effectively the scientific advantages of a structure covering a wide disciplinary field combined with a management supportive of everyone. Created on January 1, 2007, the ICMPE is a joint research unit (UMR 7182) of the CNRS and the University of Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC). Our laboratory is developing original and innovative research in the fields of chemistry and materials science, as well as at interfaces with physics, engineering and biology, in order to respond to major societal challenges in the cross-cutting themes of energy, transport, environment, sustainable development and health. Located halfway between Orly and Paris and located on the CNRS campus in Thiais, the ICMPE accommodates around sixty researchers and teacher-researchers, around thirty engineers, technicians and administrators, as well as around fifty non -permanent (doctoral students, post-docs, ATERs, CDD), specialists in molecular chemistry, polymer science, solid-state chemistry, electrochemistry, metallurgy and physics of materials.
